Seahorses by the Bay is a public art project commemorating Calvert County's 350th Birthday Celebration to be held in 2004. The project specifically involves all Calvert County Schools, public and private, in order to showcase the creativity of Calvert County's children, and to provide awareness of the importance of seahorses to the Chesapeake Bay. Each school received one three-dimensional 6' x 4' fiberglass seahorse created by the talented Exhibits staff at the Calvert Marine Museum. Each child in every school colored a template of the seahorse, and one design was chosen for each school to recreate. The creation process involves every student in the school, teaching them about teamwork, collaborative art projects, and appreciation for public sculptural works. Each Seahorse has been financially sponsored by local businesses and organizations. The completed Seahorses were collected from the schools in the spring and displayed throughout the county for the remainder of the year. In November, upon the completion of the exhibit, the seahorses were auctioned online with the proceeds benefiting the art departments of each participating school. Each school is awarded $1000 to further their art programs. The remaining proceeds from the project will be available through a grant program which allows the schools to request further funds for art equipment, art-related field trips, or beautification projects.
