Highlights from 2014!

Facility & Property
Hired a new Grounds Manager - In November of 2013, we hired a new Grounds Manager, Victor Mellen, who brings 20+ years of experience working for the Architect of the Capitol.  Throughout the past year, Victor has improved the appearance of the garden and dramatically enhanced and streamlined maintenance procedures.

Repairs to Wooded Path – thanks to a grant from the Maryland State Highway Administration, we completed asphalt and edge repairs to the Wooded Path.

Installation of 4 security lights – thanks to the support of the Board of County Commissioners, General Services coordinated the installation of four security lights in the parking lot.

Switch to LED lighting in Arts Building – General Services completed the upgrade to LED lights in both galleries of the Arts Building, as well as the artLAB and Gift Shop.

Demas Family Children’s Garden – the planning committee completed the first draft of plans for the Demas Family Children’s Garden. The plan was unveiled at June 2013 dedication of the Creekside Overlook.  We subsequently secured a grant from the State Highway Administration for Phase I of the project.

Second Expansion of the Clay Studio – thanks to a very generous matching donation by local artist Ray Bogle, we were able to purchase eight new potter’s wheels.  This donation allowed us to again expand the Clay Studio; local interest in clay classes continues to rise each year.

Expansion of the Community Garden – at the request of the Calvert County Master Gardners, we doubled the size of the Community Garden.  Produce from this garden is donated to the SMILE food pantry.  Children in our summer camp program work with the master gardeners to care for and water the garden.

Natural Play Area – the Fairy Lolly, our natural play space, continues to grow in popularity.  The students from our “Extreme Fort Building” camp, built new elements for the space this past summer.  The Fairy Lolly encourages young children to interact with nature and to engage in imaginative play.  The Fairy Lolly was named one of the top play areas in Maryland by Chesapeake Family Magazine.

Programs & Events
Expanded the number and hours of FREE programs offered at Annmarie – including MLK Days, a new lecture series, design demonstrations, Black Friday, and others.  Admission is also free to the garden every morning between 9-10am and during all Maker’s Market events.

Produced 13 rotating exhibits featuring the work of 290 professional artists and 866 non-professional artists.

The Studio School offered 166 classes, taught by 35 professional artists and teachers, for all ages and abilities, on a range of subjects, from ceramics, to dance to fiber arts.  Nearly 1000 individuals took a class at Annmarie in 2014.

CHESPAX Program – Annmarie staff completed their third year of participation in the CHESPAX environmental education program.  Our “Superheroes of Recycling” program is part of the second grade “Save the Earth” curriculum, and annually impacts more than 1500 students, teachers, and parents.

artLAB – we completed our second year of operating our creative reuse center, a program that continues to provide a space to learn about the importance of reducing waste, reusing, and recycling.   Numerous programs and activities continue to operate out of this space, and we continue to rely on donation of supplies from Calvert County Solid Waste and other private and business donors.

Certification of Summer Camp Program – the Annmarie staff successfully completed all the necessary paperwork, background checks, and policies required for state certification of our Summer Camp program.   Calvert County Personnel Office and General Services assisted with this process.

Third year to host Calvert Green Expo – working in conjunction with Calvert County Citizens Green Team, we enhanced and expanded the Green Expo.  There were more than 100 vendors and more than 1000 visitors this year.

Artsfest ‘14 presented the work of 160 artists and generated nearly $300,000 in artist and vendor (gross) sales during the two-day event.

Annmarie engaged the services of nearly 50 different entertainers and performing arts groups in 2014.

The monthly Maker’s Market program included 139 southern Maryland vendors/entrepreneurs in 2014.

Halloween in the Garden 2014 included 82 regional businesses and organizations, allowing them engage with the public in a creative and fun manner.

Annmarie collaborated with more than 40 different non-profit organizations and businesses to present classes, exhibits, and special programs in 2014.

We have a new 6-year vision going forward that will add elements to take our sculpture garden to a national level (in terms of quality). This, of course, cannot be possible unless we have ongoing financial contributions. So we are seeking your support with a tax-deductible donation to be used for such noteworthy activities at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center. Please know your generosity will benefit one of Calvert County’s most unique facilities, enriching programs, exhibits, and activities for Southern Maryland! On behalf of the board of Ann’s Circle, Inc., and the entire Annmarie community, thanks for your support!
