About MC Carey
MC Carey (they/them) is the Baltimore-based printmaker and illustrator behind the printmaking studio, Femme Prints. A self-taught artist dedicated to creating works that touch the hearts of their community and collectors alike. MC's hand-carved linoleum block prints merge texture and healing through an exclusively analog process of making.
MC creates textural carvings celebrating themes of liberation, Afro-whimsy, healing justice, and self-exploration through the lens of illustrative storytelling block prints. As a printmaker, MC works with tiny gouges, artist's linoleum, oil-based ink, and handmade papers to create works that explore worlds worth dreaming of. With an approach that is detail-oriented and focused on what is often missed, MC's enjoys the process of transformation in printmaking: each image printed is transformed over and over again from sketch to illustration to carving to printing. Each mark made is made with intention and patience, a meditative practice; linoleum block carving requires them to be present with each step of the process. MC's love of the medium is also rooted in the history of printmaking as a revolutionary and egalitarian art form. Printmaking is for the people-- created to level the playing field for artists and those who want to collect /witness original art and information. Each print is an original, yet artists get to make editions that offer more than one original image to the world-- challenging the elitism and scarcity mindset of the art world. Printmaking is inherently collaborative, and block printing, specifically, is affordable and accessible to many. Printmaking has been one of the main catalysts for revolutionary political and social movements around the world, mobilizing both the deeply connected and those on the outskirts of society. It allows the underdogs and the disenfranchised to share their voice and vision with the world, often times with a root in liberation and social change.
MC hopes to bring viewers into their world of whimsy and healing, using animals, plants, and stories linked across cultures to create visions of a world where everyone is indebted to the safety, joy, and liberation of each other and where people and the planet are in right relationship. MC believes in the power of visual storytelling to bring people together, ground communities in rituals of healing, and imagine and reimage a collectively interdependent world.
