Warm and Cozy: art that comforts

Annmarie After Hours - Opening Reception - Friday, October 13, 2023, 5-7pm

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is pleased to present our fall exhibit, Warm and Cozy: art that comforts. The exhibit features artwork that captures the sensation of feeling warm, and the physical and emotional responses we have to being warm. One of our most basic human needs, warmth can signify comfort, security, intimacy, and community connection. Expect to see depictions of sun-drenched landscapes and intimate cozy interiors, heartfelt portraits and loving embraces, plush soft sculpture and tactile works, warm wearable art, multi-sensory installations, or nostalgic subjects and family traditions.  Artwork in this show will envelop the viewer and induce a sense of comfort, security, and contentment.

Wild Muse: Animals in Art

Date:
May 5 2023 - Sep 17 2023
Gallery:
Kay Daugherty Gallery

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is pleased to present 'Wild Muse: Animals in Art'. This exhibition will be open to the public in the Kay Daugherty Gallery from May 5 to September 17, 2023.

Lions and tigers and … griffins? Oh, my! Ever since humans first started drawing on cave walls, the animal world served as an endless source of fascination. Incorporating animal motifs into their decorative vocabulary, artists today use various commonplace creatures and mythic beasts to imbue their artwork with majesty, familiarity, or even humor. This exhibition showcases a selection of artwork depicting animals, both real and imagined.

JUROR: Maureen Leary, Youth & Family Programs Manager, National Postal Museum

Juror's Statement

As an educator at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum and an art enthusiast who frequently visits museums and galleries, art has long affected me both professionally and personally. I accepted the invitation to jury this show with great enthusiasm, and I was immediately intrigued by the exhibit's name. Wild Muse is incredibly apt because it suggests both mystery and intimacy. The animal world surrounds us constantly in ways both exotic and familiar, often unseen but affecting us profoundly. We are deeply intertwined with animal life yet it remains to some degree unknowable to humankind.

Selecting the artworks for this exhibit was a rare and delightful challenge. The variety of submissions reflected the breadth and complexity of the ways humans and animals interact with and affect each other. Companionship, predation, protection, vulnerability, beauty, and power were among the wide range of themes that emerged. Reading the artists' statements provided valuable insight into both subject selection and artistic process, but ultimately the choices came down to which pieces most sparked strong and lingering feelings. Animals have the capacity to evoke the full array of human emotions and these artworks did the same.

Throughout the review process I was reminded many times that despite the immediacy and depth of our connection with the animal world, so much remains unknown and unknowable. We can wonder and speculate. We can observe and assume. We can study and research. But ultimately, we can never discover all the mysteries of the animals with our minds – we can only aspire to do so with our imagination. The animal world will always be a wild muse for artists.

Beyond the Horizon: Explorations of Landscape

Date:
Jun 9 2023 - Aug 27 2023
Gallery:
Main Gallery

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center presents 'Beyond the Horizon: Explorations of Landscape' which will be open to the public in the Main Gallery from June 9 to August 27, 2023.

'Beyond the Horizon: Explorations of Landscape' will showcase a diverse range of contemporary landscape art. The artists featured in the exhibit explore the natural world in new and innovative ways, often pushing the boundaries of traditional landscape art.

Contemporary landscape can take many forms, from realistic and representational works that capture the beauty of the natural world to more abstract and conceptual pieces that use the landscape as a means of exploring broader themes related to identity, culture, human impact, and politics. Unlike traditional landscape art, which often sought to capture a realistic and idealized representation of the landscape, contemporary landscape art often challenges our assumptions and expands our understanding of this fundamental aspect of the human experience to allow viewers to interact with the landscape in new ways.

Artists in Action provides visiting artists the opportunity to develop new artwork, network with other artists, display and sell their existing work in a gallery exhibit, and share their creative process with visitors. Through this program, artists are allowed to work in free studio space in a beautiful setting. The sculpture park provides numerous locations for artists to work and find inspiration. Outdoor artists can select days and times that fit their schedule and adjust as the weather dictates. Artists may work on any project they wish using our park as their workspace. The goal of the program is to provide artists with a safe opportunity to create and sell art while sharing the creative process with the public - at a distance. Outdoor artists may move their space freely day to day, utilizing covered areas, patios, forests, paths, etc. Artists are welcome to bring a small tent or patio umbrella for shade/ weather protection.
