Salvador is an Eastern box turtle, a land-dwelling turtle recognized by his high, domed shell and colorful markings. He shares his name with fellow box turtle Dali—the pair are named for Salvador Dalí, the celebrated Spanish artist known for his imaginative Surrealist paintings.
Built-In Protection
Eastern box turtles have a hinged lower shell that allows them to close themselves almost completely inside. This remarkable defense gives them their “box turtle” name.
A Turtle of the Land
Unlike many turtles, Eastern box turtles spend most of their lives on land. They prefer moist forests and meadows with plenty of leaves, shade, and places to hide.
