The Climate Affect — an initiative launched by the Department of Environmental Studies at St. Mary’s College of Maryland — invites students, faculty, and the surrounding community to join a network of events and collaborators to elevate arts engagement around climate resilience. The Climate Affect Collective fosters ecological and imaginative renewal through awe, wonder, and creative collaboration.
During the Fall 2024 semester, The Climate Affect explored the complex relationship between people and plants. Each student in the “Environment and Society” class studied a flower planted at the Kate Chandler Campus Community Farm by researching its science, uses, and cultural stories. Inspirational, hands-on workshops with visiting guest artists Saya Benham and Fay Nourani helped students create the art you see displayed on this gallery wall.
In Spring 2025, The Climate Affect collaborated with visiting artists Jan Burger and Emma Skurnick of North Carolina’s Paperhand Puppet Project to examine how puppetry can challenge assumptions about nature, deepen connections between species, and create awareness across human and natural systems. Students and community members applied lessons about the philosophy, art, and design of puppets to investigating themes of beauty, belonging, biodiversity, and the evolving role of humans in a rapidly changing Chesapeake Bay region. Our combined efforts culminated in a giant puppet parade and Earth Day performance directed by Performing Arts faculty collaborator Diego Villada. Featuring live music by student, faculty, and community member musicians, Making the Invisible Visible exemplified how creative expression, community engagement, and environmental awareness can come together to inspire action and imagination in the face of ecological crisis.

About Artists in Action
Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is pleased to announce the return of Artists in Action! In April and May, Annmarie’s Main Gallery will be transformed into temporary artist studios, providing a serene retreat and workspace for artists to create. The 30-acre park, patios, and pavilions will also host plein air painters and outdoor installation artists.
Interested in Applying?
Artists in Action provides visiting artists the opportunity to develop new artwork, network with other artists, display and sell their existing work in a gallery exhibit, and share their creative process with visitors. Through this program, artists are allowed to work in free studio space in a beautiful setting. The sculpture park provides numerous locations for artists to work and find inspiration. Outdoor artists can select days and times that fit their schedule and adjust as the weather dictates. Artists may work on any project they wish using our park as their workspace. The goal of the program is to provide artists with a safe opportunity to create and sell art while sharing the creative process with the public – at a distance. Outdoor artists may move their space freely day to day, utilizing covered areas, patios, forests, paths, etc. Artists are welcome to bring a small tent or patio umbrella for shade/ weather protection.

17th Annual Fairies in the Garden Outdoor Exhibit
April 3 – September 7, 2026
*Special note about the display of the houses: it takes our garden gnomes just over a week to place all the creations out in the garden, so if you visit between April 3-10, you will find some around the Arts Buiding and some in the woods.
Come explore this charming outdoor exhibit of more than 100 handmade houses scattered throughout the trails and woods of the garden. Made by wonderfully creative artists from the community (and beyond), this exhibit features works in all media.
Annmarie After Hours Opening Reception – Friday, April 3, 5-7pm
Join us for an outdoor family-friendly opening of our most magicalicious exhibit. All the houses will be displayed around the outside of the Arts Building. This is a great opportunity to see them all before they are scattered throughout the sculpture garden! Reservations are not required, just come. There will be a food truck, cash bar, and live music. Admission: free for members; $5 for adults, $3 for kids, free for age 2 & under.

JURIED SHOW – ARTIST APPLICATION
Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center invites emerging and established artists to submit original artworks to “Landmark: Iconic American Views.” This exhibition celebrates the places and scenes that define the American landscape. These places can be manufactured or natural, monumental or ordinary. From sweeping national parks and historic architecture to roadside attractions, coastal horizons, small-town main streets, and urban skylines, this show explores how artists interpret the views that shape our shared visual identity.
Artists are encouraged to depict recognizable landmarks as well as personal perspectives on what makes a place iconic. Whether capturing the grandeur of natural vistas, the character of regional architecture, or the quiet familiarity of a beloved local scene, submitted works should highlight the power of place in the American experience.
This exhibition is open to all materials and media. 2-D and 3-D artwork will be considered for this exhibition. Indoor and outdoor installations will be considered. All work must be completed within the last four years. Artists must be 18 years or older. Artists must be living and working in the United States or Canada. Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center takes a 40% commission on all gallery sales. This exhibition will be open to the public in the Kay Daugherty Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, from May 8, 2025, to September 20, 2025. There will be an Annmarie After Hours opening reception for the exhibition on May 8th, 2025, from 5 pm–7 pm.
