Collage made during MLK Days 2010

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by helping to create a community art project inspired by West African textile art. Artist Caryl Henry Alexander will guide visitors through a printing technique inspired by textile printing from the Adinkra culture of West Africa. Visitors will contribute to an ever-growing collage in the gallery and then make a print to take home as a keepsake. The final product will remain on display through February 28.

This wonderful atmosphere will give artists room to develop new work while allowing visitors the opportunity to observe, interact, and appreciate the artistic process. The Art of the Hot Rod: Photographs by Peter Harholdt

This spectacular exhibit of "art on wheels" features photographs of hot rods taken by race car driver and photographer Peter Harholdt. In his career as a photographer, Harholdt has photographed countless works of art for museums across the United States. Using a specially constructed mobile studio, he has developed equipment and techniques for photographing large format objects, including race cars. Whether photographing a painting for the Museum of Modern Art, or a 1932 Ford Roadster, Harholdt's skill and talent reveal the breath-taking beauty of each object. The Art of the Hot Rod exhibit at Annmarie Garden highlights Harholdt's photographs from the book, The Art of the Hot Rod, written by Ken Gross (2008, published by MBI Publishing Company and Motorbooks).

GREEN TOO, a complementary component of GREEN, showcases small to large scale installations that confront ecological issues on a local, regional, national, and/or global level. The exhibition creates an experience that physically immerses the audience in environmental issues.

Did you know that five million people die every year from water-related diseases? This question and other related environmental issues are examined in this compelling exhibit that includes small to large scale installations. The works confront ecological issues on a local, regional, national, and global level creating an experience that physically immerses the audience in environmental issues.

GREEN TOO: Installations with the Earth in Mind features eight artists from across the U.S, as well as the Washington DC metro area, and Southern Maryland. Christine Destrempes’ work, 13,699, was created to raise awareness of the number of people who die every day from water-related diseases. Five million people die every year from unsafe water. Clear plastic, recycled water bottle caps are used to symbolize these deaths. The choice of using plastic bottle caps calls attention to social and environmental issues surrounding bottled water.

Did you know that one third of the world’s reefs are “bleached”- that is, dead or dying due to human intervention? Mary Ellen Croteau’s work, Oceans Unraveled, is a crocheted replica of a coral reef. The crocheted parts contain more and more plastic bags as the coral loses color, until the final bleached section is crocheted entirely from plastic bags.

Sailor Made: the art of the woolie

A woolie is a hand-stitched portrait of a ship created by British seamen between the 1830s and 1880s. Long hours at sea, coupled with the on-the-job knowledge of sewing, gave sailors the time and talent to create these exceptional works of art. This unusual collection is on loan from Donald Berezoski.

Just as plants need light for photosynthesis to occur, humanity has thrived and evolved as a result of our relationship with light. Our bodies and minds crave daylight to function properly; a shortage of it and we are affected physically and emotionally. Symbolically, light often represents the good, the spiritual, the mystic, the enlightened, and life itself. Artists have long been fascinated with capturing the qualities of light.

With the invention of artificial light, artists have increasingly turned from the mere illusion to the real application of light in their work. Incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, neon, LEDs and luminous substances have made their way into a growing body of artwork. Technological advances bring plasma screens, LCD displays, lasers, and multimedia projections to the forefront of this genre. These tools afford great possibilities for the artist to engage the viewer at a physical, emotional, and sometimes hyper-visual level. Through these new media, artists continue to explore the effects of light, not just on the human condition, but also on the visible world.
