She: an Expression of Womanhood

She: an Expression of Womanhood
February 14 - September 27, 2020

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
She: an Expression of Womanhood focuses on the theme of women in art, as creators, innovators, consumers, and subject matter. In an era of multiplying female voices, world-wide political movements, and fluid gender roles and identities, this exhibit invites artists to dive into the vast and often contentious conversation about the meaning of she. The goal is to create a rich exploration of womanhood that celebrates and embraces different voices, experiences, and interpretations.

A special year for women - 2020 marks the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment, passed by Congress on June 4, 1919 and ratified on August 18, 1920, the amendment guarantees all American women the right to vote. A multitude of organizations, including museums and galleries, are marking the occasion with events, programs, and exhibits, focused on women and their stories.  In our own state of Maryland, Governor Larry Hogan has declared 2020 as the Year of Woman in Maryland:

“Our state’s history has been shaped by extraordinary women leaders, and our administration remains committed to empowering and
advocating for women in Maryland,” said Governor Hogan. “I look forward to the many events taking place statewide to commemorate
the Year of the Woman. ”   -Governor Larry Hogan

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is pleased to join this state - and nationwide celebration - by presenting She: an Expression of Womanhood.  Juried by Ms. Camy Clough, of the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, the exhibit includes more than 90 works by 70 artists from Maryland and across the nation.  The exhibit contains compelling stories and images of the joys, sorrows, and complexities of womanhood.

Bloom & Grow is a lush, colorful, and wide-ranging celebration of floral and botanical art.  From biblical depictions of the Garden of Eden, to the plein air art of the Impressionists, to the bold stylized motifs in pop culture, depictions of flowers are plentiful throughout art history and visual culture.  Bloom & Grow will feature works that continue these traditions, as well as works that push beyond to explore the symbolic, the emotional, the environmental, and the personal connections we have with flowers, plants, and all things that grow outdoors.

Are you interested in purchasing an artwork from Bloom & Grow: Brilliant Botanicals? Please email info@annmariegarden.org with the title of the work, and the artist's name, and we will be happy to assist you.

Each floral designer is assigned a work of art in the Main Gallery or the Kay Daugherty Gallery and asked to create an arrangement inspired by that work of art. The results are surprising, beautiful, and provocative - and not to be missed. 2020 will mark the 11th year for Art Blooms, an exhibit co-hosted by the Calvert Garden Club and Ann's Circle of Annmarie Garden.

Artists In Action 2020 ***CANCELLED, moved online!***

Date:
Mar 2 2020 - Apr 26 2020
Gallery:
Main Gallery

Due to the COVID-19 closures, we have turned this into Artists-in Absence: an online experience!  Follow us on Facebook or Instagram to see what our scheduled artists are working on at home!

For a few special weeks, Annmarie’s spectacular Main Gallery is transformed into artist studios, where visitors will have the opportunity to observe and interact with artists as they work. This exciting time at the Garden provides a unique retreat and experimental space for artists to develop new works, display and sell their work, to network with other artists, and to share their creative process. Over twenty artists working in a variety of mediums are scheduled to participate over the course of the event. Visitors will be able to watch, learn, ask questions, and in some cases, become engaged in an art project. The participating artists are encouraged to create a hands-on experience for guests, which may include an invitation to experiment with materials and/or process, or collaboration on an idea or design. Artists in Action is a wonderful opportunity to get an up close look at the working and creative process of an artist.

As part of the exhibition, artists' works will be available for purchase.

When Darkness Falls: Night Explorations

October 11, 2019 - January 26, 2020

Annmarie After Hours Opening Reception - Friday, October 11, 2019, 5-8pm

With the setting of the sun, the transition from day to night stirs within us a sense of mystery. What secrets does the night hold? What dreams and mysteries can be uncovered?

When Darkness Falls will exhibit imagery that depicts night as the setting of the work. Artwork will reflect on why we are drawn to the darkness, and the unknown. Work will dramatize darkness, examine the juxtaposition of illumination in darkness, explore symbolism related to darkness such as gloom and superstition and reveal the mystery cloaked in wonder of the night.

September 27 - October 26, 2019. Main Gallery

Annmarie After Hours Opening Reception - Friday, October 11, 2019, 5-8pm

Join us for an art exhibition featuring the paintings of nine women artists who see and experience the genre of landscape painting in uniquely different ways. Inspired by the written word of American geographer D.W. Meinig, the exhibition highlights how each painting embodies the  idea of "landscape" as experienced through  the hand of the artist and the eye of the viewer. Your idea of what "American Landscape" is will twist and turn with each layer of painted material.
