Art Blooms is a three-day exhibit featuring the work of more than 35 floral designers from across the region. Each floral designer is assigned a work of art in the Main Gallery or the Kay Daugherty Gallery and asked to create an arrangement inspired by that work of art. The results are surprising, beautiful, and provocative - and not to be missed. 2021 will mark the 12th year for Art Blooms, an exhibit co-hosted by the Calvert Garden Club and Ann's Circle of Annmarie Garden.

Artist In Action - Temporary Studio Program

NEW THIS YEAR!  indoor & outdoor booths

For a few special weeks, Annmarie’s spectacular Main Gallery is transformed into artist studios, where visitors will have the opportunity to observe and interact with artists as they work. In light of COVID-19, the program will include indoor and outdoor booths.  This exciting time at the Garden provides a unique retreat and experimental space for artists to develop new works, display and sell their work, to network with other artists, and to share their creative process. Over twenty artists working in a variety of mediums are scheduled to participate over the course of the event. Visitors will be able to watch, learn, ask questions, and in some cases, become engaged in an art project. The participating artists are encouraged to create a hands-on experience for guests, which may include an invitation to experiment with materials and/or process, or collaboration on an idea or design. Artists in Action is a wonderful opportunity to observe the creative process of an artist.

As part of the exhibition, artists' works will be available for purchase.

Memory & Signal: Works by Esther Iverem

Date:
Jan 16 2021 - Feb 28 2021
Gallery:
Main Gallery

Memory and Signal, launched after a year of uprisings against racism in the United States, is Esther Iverem’s exhibit of flags, quilts, soft sculpture and other textile works dedicated to the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Many of these works include excerpts from her writing and digital images that add to the narrative of history and resistance that she wants to stress in honoring King’s legacy of fighting for justice, a sustainable future for humanity and the planet.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Esther Iverem is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer and independent journalist. Her diverse body of work is about social justice and human existence—its history, current state and possible futures. It is also about the environment, including mysteries extending into the universe. Since 2010, her fiber and multi-media works have been featured in solo and group shows and acquired for personal collections. Until February 2021, her quilt “Through Many Dangers, Toils and Snares,” is traveling throughout the U.S. with “Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt and the Four Freedoms,” organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum. Her award-winning literary and visual art project, “Olokun of the Galaxy,” includes a book, soft sculpture and toys inspired by an African spirit for the deepest ocean. Before working as an independent writer and artist, she was a staff writer for national newspapers including The Washington Post. Now she is creator, producer and host of the nationally syndicated radio show and podcast ‘On the Ground: Voices of Resistance From the Nation’s Capital,” and a recipient of numerous awards and honors. She is a 2018 Fellow in the Humanities for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and received a National Arts Journalism Fellowship at Columbia University. Her other books include We Gotta Have It: Twenty Years of Seeing Black at the Movies (Hachette Book Group) and two other books of poems, The Time: Portrait of a Journey Home and Living in Babylon (Africa World Press). She is a native of Philadelphia, a graduate of the University of Southern California and Columbia University, and lives in Washington, DC. Her art studio is www.legacyquiltsandart.com.

Raise A Flag Community Art Project

Date:
Jan 23 2021 - Feb 28 2021
Gallery:
Main Gallery

Guests of all ages are invited to create a flag for our new community art project.
Raise A Flag for . . .
peace
love
unity
justice
health
healing
What will you raise a flag to?

We've had a lot on our minds in recent months. Guests of all ages are invited to design a flag to address your hopes for 2021 and add it to our growing display. You can visit Annmarie to make a flag or make one at home to share. Let's raise a flag for a hopeful 2021!

This community art project is inspired by our current gallery show "Memory & Signal" that features works by multi-disciplinary artist Esther Iverem. Esther's powerful patchwork flags explore issues of justice and resistance, as well as her hopes for the future of our planet. To learn about Esther's work: https://www.annmariegarden.org/.../memory-signal-works...

How the Raise a Flag community art project works:
Pick up a kit at our front desk. You can make your flag here. Or you can take the the kit home to make your flag and bring it back later. If you have lots of craft supplies at home, feel free to make your flag at home and bring it in. Can't get here? Snap a photo of your flag and email it to art@annmariegarden.org. We will print out your flag and add it to the display!

Get list of supplies and instructions to make your flag here.

Cost of the activity is included in the price of admission. We use a "pay what you can" admission system, with $5/person suggested.

Working with the Muse

Working with the Muse:

an exhibit by the Studio Art Quilt Associates

October 9, 2020 - January 24, 2021

Founded in 1989, SAQA now has over 3,600 members, including artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, curators, and corporate sponsors. Its mission is to promote art quilts and the artists who make them.

Many artist, writers, musicians, and even scientists look to a “muse” as the source of their creativity or genius. Some artists find a muse by exploring their own innate creativity, while others seek experiences or stories to inspire. Works in this exhibition were created by members of SAQA’s DC, MD, and WV region, each working with their own unique muses.
