FOLKSY: Cultural Traditions & Outside Visions

Date:
Apr 26 2019 - Sep 22 2019
Gallery:
Kay Daugherty Gallery

April 26 - September 22, 2019
Kay Daugherty Gallery

Annmarie After Hours Opening - Friday, April 26, 5-8pm

Join us as we explore the wide realm of folk art, outsider art, and visionary art - and other artistic expressions that are often situated outside the world of mainstream fine arts. This exhibit will highlight the unconventional, the authentic, and the self-taught artists.  What materials and perspectives are artists exploring?  How are artists blurring the lines between fine and folk, maintstream and outsider?  What cultural traditions,  personal histories, or social commentaries inspire their work?  What identities and issues are finding a voice?  How does this work challenge our ideas and address the human condition?  These and other ideas and expressions will find a home in this exciting new exhibit.

Juror:  Elaine Eff - curator, folklorist and oral historian who has contributed to the study, presentation and practice of folk and traditional arts in Maryland and America.

About the juror:  Eff has conducted folk art field research and curated numerous exhibitions nationwide including The American Folk Art Museum in NYC, Winterthur Museum, The Renwick Gallery for the Smithsonian Institution and state arts councils in Vermont, West virginia and Georgia. As head of the Cultural Conservation Program of the Maryland Historical Trust, she co-founded Maryland Traditions, the folklife program of the Maryland State Arts Council, responsible for the funding or origination of community documentation, publications, festivals, exhibits, museums and archives.Eff was Baltimore City Folklorist beginning in 1985 and Maryland State Folklorist from 1989 until 2011.Her teaching credits include MICA, Goucher College and UMBC. She is the author of The Painted Screens of Baltimore: An Urban Folk Art Revealed (University Press of Mississippi, 2013) directed films on Painted Screens, Smith Island and Wye Plantation (2019).Eff holds a doctorate in Folklore and Folklife from the University of Pennsylvania, a Masters degree in Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program and BA from George Washington University.

Juror’s Statement: It is always a treat to hear and see what people think folk art might be. Given artists' license to embroider definitions or play it straight for ‘Folksy' was especially eye-opening. Some remarkable contributors from near and far surprised me with their takes on genres, materials, memories and subject matter.  Objects both deeply personal and downright silly made it a fun show to judge. Thanks Annmarie for letting me be a part of your take on my world.

Let's celebrate rejects, underappreciated, and misunderstood works - and give them another chance at life!  With all works priced under $350, this is a wonderful opportunity to find a fabulous work of art that someone else rejected, but might be perfect for you!  We'll be selling the works off the wall, so you can take the art home to enjoy immediately.  Expect to see works from Southern Maryland artists and beyond!

Artists In Action 2019

Date:
Jan 11 2019 - Feb 26 2019
Gallery:
Main Gallery

For a few special weeks, Annmarie’s spectacular Main Gallery is transformed into artist studios, where visitors will have the opportunity to observe and interact with artists as they work. This exciting time at the Garden provides a unique retreat and experimental space for artists to develop new works, display and sell their work, to network with other artists, and to share their creative process. Over twenty artists working in a variety of mediums are scheduled to participate over the course of the event. Visitors will be able to watch, learn, ask questions, and in some cases, become engaged in an art project. The participating artists are encouraged to create a hands-on experience for guests, which may include an invitation to experiment with materials and/or process, or collaboration on an idea or design. Artists in Action is a wonderful opportunity to get an up close look at the working and creative process of an artist.

As part of the exhibition, artists' works will be available for purchase.
