Whether through visual artwork, digital media, social media, video, creative writing, spoken word, music, or other performing arts, the exhibit will include works that communicate what it means to be a teen in the world today.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My mission as an artist is to give a visual voice to issues that affect all of humanity. I use my work as a reminder of the myriad of ways we are connected, as well as to comment on both the ordinary and exceptional events that mold our day-to-day life and relationships. The body of work that I am currently pursuing addresses the ever-present issue of race from the perspective of the messages that are conveyed, whether explicit or subtle, and how discussion about race is framed. The collective trauma of our racial history continues to affect us at all levels, permeating our consciousness and becoming a filter through which we process our existence. While we have a particular history with race in the United States, these issues are universal, whether based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or other social delineation.
The question then becomes how do we “turn poison into medicine” and transform negative messaging into sources for growth and change. Similarly, how does our dialogue around race issues change, along with our ability to engage in constructive dialogue based on common understanding? How do we practice seeing others as individuals rather than a monolith? This is the work we must all do on an ongoing basis.
Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is pleased to present 'Out of Hand: Tradition Meets Tech' exhibition. This exhibition will be open to the public from October 14, 2022, to January 22, 2023.
Art-making is a process of modification. 'Out of Hand' is dedicated to exploring digital-assisted methods of expanding traditional practices. The exhibition focuses on how artworks can utilize the process of tuning, refining, or altering subjects, their contexts, or materials through the lens of digital aids. These aids could include photography, laser cutting, CNC machining, projection mapping, creative digital programs or software, virtual reality, and more.

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center and juror Anne Hyland are thrilled to present Strange Paradise: A Window into Surrealism which will take place in the Kay Daugherty Gallery. This exhibition will be open to the public from May 27 – Sept 18, 2022, and the Annmarie After Hours opening reception will take place May 27 from 5 - 7 pm.
This exhibition celebrates the works of artists who draw influence from symbols and themes from the Surrealist period of art history. From abstract “automatic” works to realistic scenes inspired by dreams and nightmares, Surrealism’s attraction for artists is revolutionary for creative potential. The works included in Strange Paradise will unite the fantastical with the familiar and link art history with contemporary practice.
Juror's Statement:
Surrealism encompasses a wide breadth of ideas and artistic themes from humor to terror to unearthly beauty. These imagined new worlds and landscapes allow both artist and viewer a way to escape reality through art: the artist through the creative exploration of the unimaginable in their work and the viewer into a new visual dimension.
The artists in Strange Paradise exemplify this exciting exploration of the mind and creation found in classic surrealist works but breathe new life into the movement in their work. Some of the artists turn to classic ideas of dream-like creatures and scenes while others to futuristic potential. It has been a pleasure learning from these artists how to think about art historical movements of the past coming through new work today.

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center and juror Colleen Morith are pleased to present I’ll Be There: An Exhibition about Love which features works by artists who think critically and deeply about the meaning of love in our culture. In the realm of our romantic lives, self-love, in our families, spiritual love, and love between friends, it is obvious that love informs our decisions and can strengthen our understanding of our communities.
This exhibition will take place in our Main Gallery and will be open to the public from June 10 to August 28, 2022. The Annmarie After Hours Opening reception will be on June 10 from 5 - 7 pm.
“Yet when we commit to true love, we are committed to being changed, to being acted upon by the beloved in a way that enables us to be more fully self-actualized. This commitment to change is chosen. It happens by mutual agreement.” – bell hooks
Juror's Statement:
I am not an artist. I love art.
I approached this exhibition by reading artists' statements first. What struck me was the many ways we love. We love passionately. We love chastely. We love family. We love friends. We love ourselves (or not). The artists in this show all expressed what love means to them - desire, happiness, growth of self, grief at the loss of great love, and the joy of love.
It was a real pleasure to ponder this very “big” word while selecting these works. I hope you will feel the intensity of love in all its variations while interacting with each piece.
As someone who in my day job is a fundraiser, I hope my outsider perspective brings together an exhibition that makes you experience something new and memorable. But this show isn’t about me.
